What Do You Think It Would Feel Like to Touch a Cloud?

What do you think a cloud would feel like? Clouds are made of water which makes it feel a little damp.  Also, it feels cold, and it feels like nothing.  Fog is actually a cloud that is on the ground.  Cumulus clouds are puffy and mean fair weather. Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy, and bring cool weather.  Stratus clouds are flat, stretched out cloud “blankets”.  They are often gray and can bring snow and rain.  Do you think a cloud would feel like nothing and damp or do you think it will feel different?

What Would It Feel Like to Touch a Cloud?

What it would feel like to be in a Cloud?

Fog is a cloud that is very low in the sky. I have been in a cloud before and it feels kind of chilly. Clouds are made up of very tiny water droplets that are so light that they float. These droplets are even tinier than water droplets in a drizzle. On Mt. Washington,  clouds at the top of the mountain can make it very moist. Cirrus clouds are the highest type of cloud in the sky. They are the thin and wispy clouds. Cumulus clouds tend to be the lowest clouds in the sky. They can cause climate change in temperature. Dark clouds usually mean a storm is coming. There are so many water droplets in it that the sun can’t shine easily through. Cumulus clouds tend to not have many water droplets in them, which is why they appear to be white.

Below is a picture of all of the types of clouds.  (Cumulonimbus clouds are the same thing as cumulus clouds.)

Farewell to Fourth Grade!

Our Fondest Memories of Fourth Grade…

Dr. Armacost:  What a year !! Could you ever have imagined a more surprising school year than what we have experienced?  Coming to CVIS presents new challenges, new opportunities and new experiences and all of you have handled these situations in an amazing manner. We are so excited to have you at CVIS for two more years and know that you will continue to do great things throughout your time at Conewago Valley.  Always remember to be kind to one another as you never know when a nice word can make a difference to another person. Enjoy your summer and we look forward to the time we can all be together at CVIS again.

Mrs. Long:   This year was AMAZING all because of each and every one of you!  As I reflect on the school year, my thoughts immediately take me back to the Orientation night and the first day of school.  Many of you walked hesitantly into my classroom, not knowing what to expect of 4th grade at CVIS.  Instantly, I knew that we had an incredible group of kiddos who were kind, caring and eager to learn!

This school year surely did not end the way we all thought it would, but it will be our memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.  Our fall was filled with a cool field trip to Codorus and many holiday activities.  Our Throw Kindness Around Like Confetti remained our theme throughout the school year.  I loved handing out a variety of shapes that displayed acts of kindness on our Kindness Tree.

You ALL mean the world to me!  I am so proud to have been your ELA teacher.  I have watched you grow physically, emotionally, socially and academically this school year.  I saw you take on the challenge of at home learning and give it your best effort each and every day.  The Living Museum is always the end of the year highlight.  Again, you took on the challenge of using your creativity to create your speech and video while at home.  I am ‘over the moon’ PROUD of you!

Kiddos, always stay true to yourself, spread Kindness like Confetti, and give your best in all that you do.  I will miss you all terribly.  Sending virtual HUGS to you.  Have an incredible summer!

Mrs. Buckley:

One of my favorite memories was the field trip to Codorus.  But more than that, my favorite memories are just the times I spent with you.  Seeing your smiling faces truly made each day special.  I loved getting the chance to work in small groups with you and enjoyed getting to know you.

Each one of you is remarkable and special.  No matter where you are, or what you do, just know that if you are kind to others and always do your best, you will make a difference in this world. You have made a difference in mine. I wish you much  joy and success in your future.

Mrs. McMaster: Wow, did we ever have an AWESOME year together in fourth grade this

year!  This year will be forever a special memory for me.  We had a great fall field trip to Codorus, created a team blog and news crew, had SO much fun in “Innovation Station,” learned SO much in math class this year, and had super awesome science experiences with Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Byrd from Gettysburg College.

We had great holiday fun…Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day…  I could not have asked for a better group of students with whom to experience a pandemic and at home learning!  You have proven to be a group of hard working R-Ox Stars, everyday showing your determination and perseverance to make the best of the situation!

I am beyond proud of how you have handled being away from one another.  I surely would rather be with you every day for the entire year, and I LOVED teaching you in-person.  However, I am so proud of how you took at home learning online head on and didn’t back down!  Together, we did it!  What a great year it was!  Wishing you all a wonderful summer…H.A.G.S.!! 🙂

Mrs. Reichart:

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Vivian Greene

When we started the year in the fall, I told you that the days would go by very quickly. At the end of this week, you will be officially 5th graders!

I know this year was different than any other year–and it was definitely not what we had planned. I am proud of each of you for growing, learning, and becoming the wonderful young people you are–despite all of the changes and challenges you encountered! You might not realize it now, but you will always remember 4th grade and how the world became different overnight.

Thank you for being amazingly thoughtful, kind, and caring young people. I enjoyed visiting you in Mrs. McMaster and Mrs. Long’s classrooms. I am only sad that we didn’t get to say goodbye in person!

Stay true to yourselves. Every one of you is absolutely perfect in his or her own way!

Australian Bushfires Threaten Animals.

Cooler weather and rain are expected in Australia. This year’s bushfires have brought devastation and damage. The fires have been terrible. Thousands of homes have been burned, and 28 people have died. Some reports say that the bushfires have cost us a lot of homes for both humans and animals. Experts believe that the fires will go on for months. They believe that the fires won’t go out until they burn themselves out, or until we have a really big rainstorm. The cool weather is a really good sign for Australia.

Some more of the news that is happening in the world is:

East Africa Struggles with Swarms of Locusts

Huge swarms of locusts are attacking farms and fields in the East African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. Billions of insects are moving through the area and destroying crops in the worst invasion in years. Locusts are grasshoppers. Normally they don’t  travel in groups, and they do little harm, but when they come together as locusts, they lay eggs along the way and that produces more locusts. These locusts are called “Desert Locusts” They lay their eggs in the wet ground. Locust swarms are more common when heavy rains follow a dry period. This season has been Africa’s rainiest season in 40 years. Dark clouds of swarms have already headed towards South Sudan, and Uganda.

Are Video Games a Sport?

We hope you enjoy this argument about whether or not video games should be considered a sport.  As assigned, we will research and present both sides.

On one side of this debate, people may think that video games should be a sport because they are rooted in competition, involving athletic ability, requiring practice and physical activity, taking place in stadiums, and cheered on by die hard fanatics.  Video games and the playing of them checks all of the required boxes. Let’s start by throwing the idea against some of those definitive words conjured up when thinking about the meaning of “sport”—competition, entertainment, athletic ability.

Some systems have controllers that in order to do stuff, you must swing your arms and punch, and that gives you exercise.  A sport such as soccer requires an athlete to run; in video games you can do that without breaking a sweat. Video games can make exercise really fun, and it’s competitive too.

There are video game tournaments where people play “around the world,” play competitive games, and, so it’s just like a sport.  Some video games take place in the real world. Some sport video games are for the Wii; you actually swing your controller forward and back.  On screen, it looks like you are playing tennis, baseball, basketball, and much more. A good exercise/sport game for the Nintendo Switch is Arms.  The player actually punches in real life with a controller in his/her hand, and it punches in the game as though the player is boxing in real life.

Since boxing is a sport; we would think that boxing through a video game would be considered a sport as well.  Another good game is Rec Room Virtual Reality (VR); it has all kinds of VR sports, and you can talk to players while they are in the game.  It’s social, helps people exercise, and is competitive like a real-life sport.

On the other side of this debate are those who think that video games should not be considered a sport.  A sport is where you have to be active and have a possibility of getting injured.  With video games, people have very little opportunity to be active. Sitting on your couch, interacting with just your TV is not a sport.   It’s just pressing buttons and talking into a microphone. A sport is where you sweat, because you are being so active. You don’t exercise while playing video games; you just sit still and can be lazy.  It’s really not a sport at all.

Moving your hands and fingers is by no means physically challenging.  Many of those who say that video gaming is to be considered a sport are trying to convince themselves of a lie by going to the extreme.  A sport constitutes legitimate physical activity. Real sports take place in the real world; while video games take place in a made up or virtual world.  Some video games can’t possibly be considered a sport, like horror games. They can’t be a sport when all they do is scare people.

In conclusion, while some games may give you exercise, you exercise so little that it barely makes a difference.  Kids get unhealthy from playing these games all of the time. Therefore, video games cannot be considered a sport; although others will forever disagree with this conclusion.

Which Season is the Best: Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall?

Welcome to this week’s R-Ox Stars Persuasive Blog.  We are discussing which season is the best: winter, spring, summer, or fall.  Our classmates all had the chance to share their ideas with us. We summarized all of their thoughts, and then we drew a conclusion.

One of our classmates, Elizabeth, posted that she likes spring because her birthday is in the spring, and she likes that it can be hot or cold, or it could even rain!  That is why she likes spring the best.

Another one of our classmates, Crosby, also said that spring is the best season, because it can be hot or cold.  He likes all of the fresh strawberries and other fruit that is provided in the spring time. He likes how fruit has a fresh taste in the spring, unlike in winter

Madelynn thinks that summer is the best season, because it is hot.  It also helps that her birthday is July 26th, so that is why she says that summer is the best season.

Cesar said that he likes summer the best as well, because we have no school.  This means that we can swim and have fun with our friends.

Aaliyah said that she likes fall the best because it is hot and cold at the same time. She likes how it has different weather, and isn’t extremely hot or extremely cold like summer and winter.

In conclusion, the majority of students in our class think that spring is the best season.
